The purpose of Six Sigma is to reduce the mistakes that an organization makes while increasing the value that an organization gains. All organizations whether they are businesses or non profits have room to improve. There are always greater efficiencies that can be made and waste that can be reduced. In particular organizations that are fast growing tend to end up some of the greatest inefficiencies.

Where does the name Six Sigma come from?
The roots of the name lie in the measurement standard that was established by Carl Fredrick Glaus (1777 ? 1855). Glaus was the first to introduce the idea of a normal curve. Building on this work was Walter Shewhart who in 1920's showed that three sigma from the mean was a point where processes need to be corrected. The term Six Sigma was first coined by a Motorola Engineer Bill Smith. Motorola decided during the 1980's that measuring defects per thousand was insufficiently accurate. Instead they wanted to measure in defects per million opportunities. Bill Smith designed a process which could reduce defects below 3.4 defects per million opportunities. This can also be thought of being able to control a process within six sigma or standard deviations form the centerline. It was from this that the name six sigma was derived.
